Lumion LiveSync for SketchUp

Lumion 8.3 was released today as a free upgrade from Lumion 8. At the core of the release is the new Lumion LiveSync for SketchUp and the improved LiveSync for Revit.

LiveSync is an exciting new feature for architects and designers in SketchUp. Seeing a real-time render as you work is nothing short of astonishing.

Lumion LiveSync lets architects and designers immediately set up a live, real-time visualization of their SketchUp or Revit model in Lumion’s beautiful, lifelike environment. Instantly, they’ll see their model in Lumion’s fully featured landscape with highly detailed materials, photorealistic lighting and shadows, and objects from a massive content library.

Lumion 8.3 also enables faster 3D rendering workflows. As architects and designers continue to develop and change their models in SketchUp and Revit, they can simultaneously prepare their renders in Lumion and save their scene for future development or quick rendering.

The new LiveSync in Lumion 8.3 includes:

• Point-of-view synchronization between SketchUp/Revit and Lumion
• The ability to add and save Lumion’s beautiful materials to a LiveSync project
• Real-time materials synchronization and visualization
• Automatic model importing into Lumion (no need to separately import a model)

What Is Strategic Design Thinking and How Can It Empower Designers?

What should the role of the designer be in today’s times of complexity, unsurity, and frequent change? What is Strategic Design, and how can it empower the designer beyond traditional practice? Are designers a group of technicians and artists who produce products and artefacts for short contracts? How can they fulfill more essential roles of big picture projects? Designers are often set into roles of minor problem solving and yet their training and expertise allows for a wider set of potential influence. Strategic Design thinking suggest that if designers could communicate and employ their skills more effectively, they can position themselves in order to influence a bigger picture.

How can strategic design thinking produce innovative projects that affect big picture issues?

Such are some of the questions the Helsinki Design Lab, a design research initiative funded by the Finnish government, posed throughout its advocacy for Strategic Design Thinking. The ambition of this research group was to identify and codify the design strategies and vocabulary developed within innovative case studies. Each of studies dealt with complex conditions, as many important issues today are entrenched in systems and networks of several intersecting elements. The intent of this article is to investigate how Strategic Design might be applied to the design and development interests of the freelance Toptal community.

Strategic Design requires a certain vocabulary in order to communicate the values of the design practice. Much of these values have to do with becoming involved in the background and organization of projects, rather than the forming of the product, or outcome. Any successfully designed project, whether its an interface, building, or luxury car, is really a product of all of the underlying systems behind its making. This means the bureaucratic context,the financing, the company history, et cetera.

Design Principles: Introduction To Hierarchy

The need for technical skill in graphic design continues to grow as technologies and interfaces change. Yet, how have fundamental understandings of visual hierarchy, perception and composition changed along with new interfaces? The modern concept of human visual perception is rooted in psychological study. Thus, the way that we see and perceive graphic information will always be the same, despite continually changing graphic interfaces. So, how can contemporary interactive design consider and improve upon the foundations of graphic composition and visual hierarchy?

The foundational rules of visual perception are critical for any graphic design, as they instruct how information with embedded meaning is conveyed as quickly as possible. However, these rules were founded in print and have yet to be redefined for digital media. There has yet to be a sort of digital Bauhaus school to set these new principles. The rules of hierarchy and composition are not just dated, they break down in web interfaces. We simply experience the interface in an entirely different way from print.

Most designs for interactive and web media are still in their infancy since designers treat the screen as a static, two dimensional object. Can interactive design innovate beyond reapplying print formats to the web? Yet before they can be developed, the fundamental understandings of visual hierarchy, perception and composition should be understood and introduced. As a basis for visual communication they remain relevant. However, perhaps we can investigate how these principles are being employed in innovative examples that produce enjoyable experiences in interactive media.
